CHENNAI TEMPLES - Tambaram - Manimangalam (Sri Dharmeswarar)

Sri Dharmeswarar

Manimangalam village is located about 10 kms from Tambaram on the western side of Mudichur Road leading towards Padappai.

This village has a very high historic importance because of the huge battle fought here between Narasimhavarma Pallava and the Chalukya King Pulikesi II. This battle was fought in Manimangalam during 7th Century AD.

Manimangalam has an ancient temple for Lord Shiva called Sri Dharmeswarar. The Goddess here is Sri Vedhaambigai. According to the inscriptions, this temple is said to have got constructed by Chozhas. This temple has mentions in the inscriptions as Grama Sikhamani Chathurvedhi Mangalam, belonging to Kunrathur Naadu, a division of Puliyur Kottam in the district of Jayamkonda Chozha Mandalam.
In ancient days, the lands along with temple were donated by the kings to the Vedic scholars for performing Vedic rituals for the well being of the country. Such villages were called as Chathurvedhi Mangalams. Manimangalam is one such village and was called as Grama Sikhamani Chathurvedhi Mangalam.

The temple is built on a very vast space amidst greenish paddy fields. A beautiful Peepul tree welcomes you as you enter the gates of the temple. This temple is maintained by Archeological Society of India and protected properly. The looks and the structure itself show the antiquity of the temple.

There is a small Mandapam outside the sanctum. Sri Vinayagar and Sri Subramanyar are seen on either sides of the entrance of the sanctum. The main deity, Sri Dharmeswarar is seen facing east. One can feel the divinity in this calm and cool ambience with the view of the Lord in natural light and the light from the temple lamps.

There is a small Nandhi facing the Lord in the sanctum, from this Mandapam.

There’s another small gated portion facing south, which is empty. There had been a beautiful Sri Natarajar here in ancient days and some miscreants had stolen the deity. While local people chased them, it is said that the miscreants had thrown Sri Natarajar in the nearby pond and ran off, in which Sri Natarajar’s idol was damaged.

In the inner praakaaram, Sri Vinayagar is found at the South western corner, under a tree in good shadow.  Along the walls of the praakaaram, Sri Vinayagar and Sri Dhakshinamurthy are seen facing South.  Lord Sri Mahavishnu is facing the west from the walls of the praakaaram.

Lord Sri Brahma, Sri Sandigeswarar and Sri Durgai are seen on the Northern side of the praakaaram.  A window, beautifully carved window with 12 openings is found on the eastern side wall of the praakaaram.   The whole temple is built on stone with wonderful architecture. Even the steps to reach the Mandapam outside the sanctum is done beautifully, but damaged in few places.

There are many dilapidated idols of Parivaara moorthies and Shiva Lingam kept safely in the inner praakaaram.  There is a separate shrine for Goddess Vedhaambigai at the outer praakaaram, facing south. Goddess is beautifully dressed and is so gracefully in blessing posture like a Mother blessing her children.  Manimangalam also has another ancient temple for Lord Shiva called Sri Kailaasanathar, which again is an ancient one and needs attention.

CHENNAI TEMPLES - Tambaram - Ratinamangalam (Kubera Temple)

WHO IS KUBERA

Vaishravane is the grandson of Brahma. Who is none other then Kubera. Indeed, he is the cousin to Ravana. Even though there was a mutual fight between them, due to the vision and grace of Kubera on Ravana's Kingdom, Ranvana and his subjects were able to live a luxurious life.

Whenever Kubera reaches his other distinations by using his plane many droppings of gold silver and pearls were there. Those places flourished in no time. The epic says with this same flying equipment Ravana Kidnapped Sita.

Kubera did severe penance. On seeing his penance lords Shiva was very much pleased and his seat in northern direction was handed over to him. With the leadership he adorned him as king of Anandapuri.

Lord Kubera is the leader of "Yatchas" he is the very best among them. Many people do not know that there is a difference between "Yatchas" and "Bhoothaganas". Rakshas of shiva are semidivine gods and their devotees are "Bhoothaganas".

Yatchas are there to help mankind and procure wealth. They plead with the Lord for the betterment of good people and the created to help devotees.
Kubera is one of the "Yatchas" he was very much devoted to Shiva. He performed severe penance invoking the blessing of Shiva. He impressed Shiva with his immense Bhakthi and relentless efforts.

Shiva gave darshan to Kubera with Goddess Parvathi. Kubera was stunned to see the splendor and beauty of Goddess Parvathi. He felt sorry that he had not worshipped such a fine Goddess earlier and one of his eyes winked. Goddess Parvathi was angry that Kubera was seeing her with evil intention. She made his eye burst. Kubera lost one eye sight. Lord Kubera requested siva to forgive him and pleaded that he had not seen the Goddess with any evil intention. Siva asked Goddess to decide. Goddess Parvathi forgave Kubera and let one of the eyes grow on smaller size. So one eye of kubera is smaller than the other. Kubera was rewarded by shiva with the post of one of the Guards of eight disas. Kubera was given the post of guarding northen direction. Goddess made him the Lord of wealth and materials.

Kubera is the God of wealth and material but not its originator. His responsibilities is to distribute the above two things properly. Creating wealth and distributing the same is the divine mother Goddess Lakshmi. Kubera is seen with his family in the photographs. In his hand a vessel studded with Navarathinas will be there in some photographs he is seen in blessing pose and the Gold coins and Navarathinas are pouring down.
Lord Balaji or Venkateswara at Thirupathi is said to have Borrowed money from Kubera for his marrige and he is still paying the interest on the loan amount. Hence it would seen that lord Venkateswara will be in protection during the ashadmasa.

Kubera is the God of wealth and other worldly things. So doing Pooja to kubera will enrich one's life. However that itself is not enough. To have a wealthy and comfortable the life one has to perform Sri Lakshmi Kubera Pooja only. There are separate Mantras and Vidhis to perform the same. They are to be strictly followed. CHENNAI TEMPLES - Tambaram - Tiruvidandai

Thiruvidandai temple, constructed by the Pallava kings, is one of the 108 Divya Desams in the country. The temple lies near the seashore and has a Varaha Kshetram which is used for conducting marriages. This ancient temple has a large tank and a separate shrine for Komalavalli Nachiyar.

The main deity of the temple is Lord Adisesha with His consort on His left side. It also has a separate shrine for Andal and a shrine for Nithya Kalyana Perumal.

Legend

Sage Gavalaa Maharishi had 360 daughters. He was very much worried to get them married. He prayed to Lord Vishnu. The Lord who resides here promised the sage that he would marry one daughter a day and married all the 360 in a year. So the Lord here is called as ‘Nithya Kalyana Perumal’. It is also told that Lord then immediately converted all the daughters into one and kept on left lap. Hence the name is called “ThiruVidandai”.

An annual Brahmotsavam festival is conducted at this temple during the Chittirai month, along with Garuda Seva in the months of Aani, Aadi, Masi and Thai. The main prasadam offered to the deity in the temple include Puliyodharai (Tamarind Rice), Dhadhyonam (Curd Rice), Pongal, Chakkarai Pongal, Vada, Adhirasam and Murukku.

Nithya Kalyana Perumal Temple is a 1000 years old and it is believed to be built by Chola kings. The temple is not very huge but very beautiful. Thiruvidandai or Nithya Kalyana Perumal Temple is one of 108 Divya desam (108 most important temples of Lord Vishnu). It is near Chennai around 40 km. It is Varaha Kshetram. It is famous for marriages. The temple was built by Pallavas. It is near Seashore. It has a large temple tank in front of the temple. It is quite an old temple. There is a separate shrine for Komalavalli Nachiyar. The Lord here stands on Adisesha and holds his consort on his left side. There is also separate shrine for Andal. The Temple follows Thenacharya Sampradayam. Sage Markandeya and King Mahabali had visited the kshetram. Even today many pilgrims come here and get the blessings of Lord Nithyakalyana Perumal. Those who wants to get married would be offering two garlands to Lord. After Puja, the priest would give one of the garlands. The person should wear that garland and do Pradakshinam. This is practiced, so that marriage would be fixed soon to the bhaktas.

At this temple, one finds the Lord in a unique standing posture facing East. While one leg is on the ground, the other is on Adhisheshan and his wife. And he is seen balancing Goddess Agila Valli on his left thigh. Lord Vishnu came here as a Brahmachaari and married one girl a day. Unmarried people will find their life partner immediately if they visit this temple. This place is also called Nithya Kalyana Puri, Sri Puri and Varaaha Puri. As the Lord merged 360 girls into one and appeared with the Goddess on his left on the last day, this place is called Thiru- Idanthai (Thiru-Goddess, Idanthai-left side), which in course of time became ThiruVidanthai.

CHENNAI TEMPLES - Tambaram - Tiruneermalai

Thiruneermalai is a panchayat town in Kancheepuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is popular for a temple on a hill. From the top of the hill, one can view the entire Pallavaram area. This place is very close to Chennai city (4 km from Pallavaram GST road).

The temple is near Chennai. There are two temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu. One temple is on the base of the hill and the other temple is on top of the hill. Long ago, this hill was surrounded by water when Thirumangai Azhwar visited the shrine. Hence it is called Thiruneermalai. It is one of the Divya desam. People need to climb steps to reach the hill top. It would be around 200 to 300 steps. The base Temple is dedicated to Lord Rama also known as Neervanan in a standing posture and the temple up the hill has four shrines for Lord Ranganatha (Kidanthaan - in reclining posture), Animamalarmangai Thayaar, Trivikrama (Nadanthaan - in standing posture) and Lord Narasimha (Irundhaan - sitting posture). It is a double prakaram(outer courtyard) temple. The Garuda shrine faces the Lord. The view from the top of the hill is wonderful.

The legend is that when Valmiki prayed to Lord Ranganatha and Goddess Ranganayaki in the base temple, they took the form of Lord Rama and Sita, Sesha, Conch, Chakra as Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatruguna and Garuda as Hanuman. Sage Valmiki could view Lord Ranganatha, Lord Trivikrama and Lord Narasimha in the top temple.
