SRI RAMA DARSHAN - MADURANTHAGAM

Eri Katha Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in the town of Madurantakam,Tamil Nadu, India. This is the stalam where Udayavar was named 'Ramanujar'. Ramanujar was instructed the Pancha Samskara Mantram. Mathuranthaka Chaturvedi Mangalam, Vaikunda Varthanam, Thirumathurai, Thirumanthira Tirupathi, Karunagara Vilagam are the other names of the stalam. Tirumisai Alwar got siddhi in this stalam.

This is the place under the Magizha tree, where Sri Ramanujar was given "Pancha Samskaram"(Sramasayanam) by his acharyan Peria Nambigal. That is when Maduranthakam was given the name "Dvayam Vilindha Tirupathi". Upon receiving Kanchi Varadarajar's divine order through Tirukachi Nambi, Ramanuja set to Srirangam to become the disciple of Peria Nambigal. He met him in Maduranthakam itself, in the lake precincts. Peria Nambigal was on his way to Kanchi to install Ramanuja as the successor of Sri Aalanvandar. In the month of Avani, on the Sukla Panchami, Peria Nambigal gave the Samasrayanam (Pancha Samskaram) Dvaya Mantropadesam. The festival is celebrated every year. This is the only place where Ramanujar can be seen as a Grihastha.

The main deity of the Eri Katha Ramar temple is Lord Rama. He is in standing position facing east in this temple. The height of the main idol is around 8 feet. In this temple Lord Rama is seen along with his consort Sita and his brother Lakshmana. Lord Hanuman cannot be seen in this temple, which is rare.

This temple is on the banks of the huge Madurantakam lake. According to the legend, once Lord Rama saved the people of Thirunindravur from floods by protecting the bunds of the lake from breaching. Hence this god is known as Eri Katha Ramar (Rama who saved the tank). This god is known to fulfill the wishes of the devotees; however the temple is being maintained poorly for lack of funds.

At the entrance of the temple, you will see the Inscriptions on the wall showing the donations made by the British collector - Colonel Blaze. You will also see a small representation of the Colonel himself.

The walls of the temple are also inscribed with the devotional songs composed by Saint Tyagaraja, a great poet saint of south India, in praise of Lord Rama. There are separate shrines for Lakshmi Narasimhar, Periya Nambi and Ramanuja, Andal, Sudarshana and Vedanta Desika in this temple. A separate shrine for Shri Anjaneya is located on the opposite banks of the lake.

On the day of Sri Rama Navami Lord Rama is adorned  in five different attires- Lord with a Plait , Ekaantha Vastram , ThiruAabarana Alankaaram , Vaira Mudi Sevai and Muthu Kondai .  Vaikunda Ekadashi in December-January (Tamil Margazhi) is celebrated very grandly in this temple. The Utsavamurti (procession idol) of Lord Rama and Karunakara Perumal can also be seen in this temple. Karunakara Perumal is none other than Lord Vishnu with his consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. Lord Rama himself is said to have worshipped the Utsavamurti at Madurantakam.

Periya Nambi took Ramanuja to the Bakula tree of the temple and inducted him on the five sacraments ("Pancha Samskarams"), viz., "Tapam", "Pundram", "Namam", "Mantram" and "Yagam . Thus the Bakula tree became to the Vaishnavites what the Bodhi tree is to the Buddhists.

This temple is believed to be about 1500 years old. Uthama Chozhan, the ancestor of the great Chozha king Raja Raja Chozhan, is said to have played a role in the construction of this temple and is believed to have dedicated and given this temple to those learned Vedic Scholars (Vedham Othum Anthanar).

Sri Rama Navami is the best time to visit this temple of Madurantakam. Sri Rama Navami celebrations in the month of Panguni (March-April) last for 10 days. In the month of 'Ani' (June-July) the Brahmotsavam (Annual Celebrations) of Lord Rama are conducted.

mudikondan c Sri Kothandaramar Temple – MudikondanWith the deadline to return to Ayodhya with the expiry of 14 years, Sri Rama sent Hanuman to Bharatha to inform him that he was enroute to the kingdom so that he should not end himself due to any delay or doubt about his return.. Hanuman undertook the mission efficiently and delivered the message to Bharatha and returned to Rama. Sri Rama had already accepted the hospitality of Sage Bharadwaja and was waiting outside the Ashram of Sage Bharadwaja. Hanuman felt that he was ignored by Rama by accepting the hospitality of the sage before his return. Sri Rama offered half the feast to Hanuman and pacified him. Hence Hanuman, expressing his anger, is not with the Lord in main shrine but is just opposite him having his own shrine in the temple.

Mudikondan has a mention in the Valmiki Ramayana. It was here the ashram of sage Bharadwaja existed and where Lord Ranganatha appeared for Sri Rama. An ancient temple of 2000 years.

mudikondan d Sri Kothandaramar Temple – MudikondanGenerally temples for Rama are constructed facing South so that Vibishana, after his cornonation following the end of Ravana could ever worship Rama in the North. But the Mudikondon Temple is facing east as Bharadwaja Rishi wanted to have a Darshan of Sri Rama with Sita and Lakshmana with his crown. Instead, Sri Ranganatha shrine is installed facing South. The tank is behind the temple. Hanuman shrine is opposite to that of the Lord. The idol of Sri Rama is so beautiful with a slight bending holding the bow.

Festivals:

The third saturday of the Tamil month Purattasi – September-October is festive day with 13 day celebration. The festival concludes with Sita Kalyanam and a procession. Each month, the Punarvasu day, the birth star of Sri Rama is observed in a festive style. The crowd is mor e during Saturdays. Also the new years day both Tamil and English years, are observed.

History:

During his march to Lanka, Sri Rama stayed in the hermitage of Sage Bharadwaja for a short while, when the sage wanted to treat the Lord with a feast. Sri Rama politely declined to accept the offer as he was on a mission and promised to accept the same on his way back to Ayodhya. When Rama was returning back after completing his mission, his Pushpaka aircraft landed near the hermitage. Sage Bharadwaja installed Sri Ranganatha for Rama’s puja before the feast. Rama gave darshan to Sage Bharadwaja with his Mudi (crown) and hence the place is known as Mudikondan.

SRI RAMA DARSHAN - THIRUPPULLANI

Thiruppullani is a temple is situated 8 kilometers south of Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu.

Thirupullani is also known as Dharbasayanam, or Pullaranya Shetram in Ramanathapuram District is one of the most sacred Vaishnavate temple to the Hindus lies about 8 k.m away from Ramanathapuram. It is one of the 18 Thirupathies in the Pandiya Kingdom. The presiding deity of the Renowned temple here is Sri. Adhi Jegannathaperumal with His consort Sri. Padmasani Thayar. It is one of the All India Pilgrimage centre because of its association with the great Epic Ramayana and only here Sri. Rama came and worshipped the presiding deity Sri. Adhi Jennatha Perumal and secured a divine bow to fight against Ravana. It is here that Sri. Rama have laid for three days on kusha grass facing the sea and invoked the aid of the sea God for safe passage to Sri Lanka. Sri Vibeshana with his consort surrendered at the feet of Sri. Rama and hence known as Sarnagathi sthala - a place for un-qualified surrender to the Lord. The temple is glorified by 20 holy verses of Thirumangai Azhwar in his "Periya Thirumozhi". The temple with magnificent Rajagopuram is a feast to the eyes.

In Ramayana, Ravana, took away sita and captured her as a prisoner in Lanka. Sri Ramar, on hearing the action performed by Ravana, had to take proper and immediate action to get out Sitapiratti from Ravana. But, Ravana’s brother Vibheeshanan who lived along with him doesn’t liked the low act of Ravan and advised him to return Sitapiratti to Sri Rama, else the whole Lanka might get into danger. On hearing the advise from Vibheeshanan, Ravana got angry on him and asked him to get out of Lanka and join along with Sri Rama. Vibheeshanan came out from Lanka and fell down to the divine feet of Sri Rama and explained him that Sita Piratti is kept as the prisoner in Lanka. Since, Vibheeshanan finally fell down to the feet of Sri Ramar for complete Saranagathi, this sthalam is also named as “Saranagathi” Kshetram.

Sri Ramar, stayed along with Sugreev, Hanuman, Vibeeshanan and other Vanara senais and discussed with all of them that how to get out Sita piratti from Lanka. He stayed in this Pullani sthalam and did tapas in Sayana Kolam on Dharbaipull (the grass) for sevan days without eating anything. Since because of doing tapas on the grass and showed his sayana kolam in the pull (grass), this sthalam is called “Thiruppullani”. Pull means the grass and the Anai means the bed and since SriRamar showed his sayana kolam in Pullani, this sthalam is called as “Pullani”. Sri Ramar worshipped the Aadhi Jagannatha perumal and prayed him to help him out to get Sita piratti. As satisfied by the worship of Sri Ramar, Aadhi Jagannatha perumal gave him the Bow and because of this, the perumal is also named as “Deivasilaiyar” and Divya Sapan.
Thiruppullani is located near Sethu Samudhram shore (Sethu Karai). Sri Ramar could not know how to cross the huge ocean and got the advise from Vibheeshana that they can cross the ocean only if all the water dries. He advised Sri Ramer that he can ask the Samudhara Raja to get dried and can make them the way towards the Lanka. On getting the advise from Vibheeshana, Sri Ramar seeked the help of the Samudhara Rajan. But he doesnt show any response for Sri Ramar.

Sri Ramar worshipped before the Samudhara Rajan to make the way, but since there was not response from him, Sri Ramar got angry and threatened against samudhara Rajan that if he doesnt make them the way, he would make the ocean dry completely. On hearing the threatened words from Sri Ramar, Samudhara Raja was frightened and came out from the ocean along with his wife Varuni and fell down on the feet of Sri Ramar as Saranagathi. Inspite of Vibheeshanan got the saranagathi, samudhara Rajan and his wife Varuni also got the saranagathi and thereby justifies that this Kshetram is given the name as “Saranagathi Kshetram”.

After this, the Samudhara Rajan made the ocean to become quite and asked Sri Ramar to build a bridge, so that they can travel through it to reach Lanka. As advised by Varunan, Nalan and all the other Monkeys (Vanara Senai) started to build a bridge and this bridge is called as “Sethu Anai”, since this is constructed along the Sethu Karai (Shore). And finally crossing through this bride to Lanka, Sri Ramar fought with Ravana and killed him and got out Sita Piratti.

Kanva rishi, Who was Maha rishi stayed in this sthalam and did a strong tapas against the perumal without having any food. On satisfied with the tapas of Kalvar Rishi, Emperumaan gave his seva and asked for the Varam that he should be always along with him and continue to help him. The perumal agreed his words and continued to help him.

Once there lived a rishi by named Devala Maharishi and did a strong tapas on the perumal. He started his tapas after taking the bath and started the tapas. When he was doing the tapas, seven deva Kanyas came down to this sthalam and wanted to take a bath in the small river.

They enjoyed that moment and all of them forgot themselves. Their enjoyment made them to forget them to give the proper respect to Devalar Maharishi and on seeing this act of the Sapta deva Kanyas, he gave them the sabham of all of them to become Yatchars (ordinary humans with less minded). On getting the sabham, allthe 7 deva Kayas felt for it and realised their mistake and asked Devalar Maharishi that how could they get out from the curse. Devalar Maharishi asked them to get to Pullaranyam (Thriuppullani) and get the help from pullar Maharishi, so that he can help them to get out of the Sabham.

All the sevan deva Kanyas reached Thiruppullani fell down to the feet of pullar Maharishi. They all told him about the sabham got from Devalar Maharishi and he had advised all of them to get the help of pullar Maharishi to get out of the curse. Pullar Maharishi advised all the 7 Kanyas to stay in Thiruppullani and worship the Aadhi Jagannatha perumal and he is the only person who can make them to get out of the sabham. When Sri Ramar came to this pullaranya kshetram, his eyes glanced on all the 7 deva kanyas and at that moment all of them were out of the sabham and once again reached the deva lokam.

In this sthalam, Sri Ramar is found in Tapas Kolam in Dharbha Sayanam. Generally, the Emperumaan is found on Aadhiseshan as the bed, but here in thsi sthalam, he is found on the pullanai and Lakshmana, who is the hamsam of Aadhiseshan is found along with Sri Ramar and helping him. The utsavar is kothanda Ramar and is seen along with Sita piratti, Lakshman and Hanuman. On the south side of Artha mandapam, is seen a separate sculpture of Vibheeshanan.

A separate sannadhi for pattabbi Ramar is also found. Pattabisheka Ramar is the thriukkolam of Sri Ramar while he was given the throne to take over Ayodhya as the king along with Sita piratti, Lakshmana and Bharatha and Sathrukkanan. This sannadhi is found in front of dharba sayana Rama sannadhi.

This is a separate sannadhi for Sandhana Gopalan, which is found on the north of Dharbha sayana Ramar sannadhi, and the Mandapam is called as “Sandhana Gopala Mandapam”. In this sannadhi, Sri Krishnar is found as a small child on Aadhisesha. It is believed that on worshipping this perumal can get the pragnancy. The perumal is daily fed with Milk Paayasam as the “Naivedhyam” in the night. It is said that all the pilgrimates travel towards Rameswaram, have to worship this Thiruppullani Aadhi Jagannathan. On the west side of Moolavar sannadhi, there is a big Banyan tree is found and beneath that is found a lots of Siva Lingam. It is said that people can get the pregnancy by dedicating the Siva Lingam beneath the tree.

SRI RAMA DARSHAN - VADUVUR

Sarobhoji Raja installed the idol of Lord Rama and built this temple

Located 24kms South East of Thanjavur off the Pattukottai Highway and 14kms West of Mannargudi is the Kothandaramar temple at Vaduvur. This place is also referred to as Vakulaaranya Kshetram.

dsc02896Vaduvur is a place situated between Thanjavur and Mannargudi, where water from lakes, ponds and canals are used for cultivating both wet and dry lands, which one can find in abundance. Apart from being fertile, this place is famous for Sri Kodhandarama temple.

Here the main deity, Sri Kodhandaramar along with Sri Seetha Piratti, Lakshmanar and Hanuman appear in ‘Thirukalyana kolam’ and this temple is particularly special since the utsavars also appear in this same state.

The original Perumal in this place is Sri Gopalan with Goddesses Rukmini and Sathyabhama. The other holy names for Vaduvur are Vagularanyam (magizhankadu), Bhaskara Kshetram and Dhakshina Ayodhi. Vagula maram (maghizha maram) is the sacred tree of this sthala.

This place called Vaduvur was once donated to the vidhwans by the kings of Thanjavur on an Ekadasi day and hence it is also called as ‘Ekadasi’ village.

There is an interesting story about how the Rukmani-Sathyabhama samedha Gopalan temple gave place to Sri Kodhandarama temple.

dsc02881When Rama spent 14 years in the forest and was preparing to leave for Ayodhya, the rishis prayed in earnest asking him to stay with them. The feeling of separation from His holy presence melted their hearts.

Torn between duty and love, Rama sent them away for the time being and starts thinking about their request. He then created His own enchanting divine form as a deity and left it outside the ashrama.

The rishis who came to see Rama and Seetha the next day were spellbound by the beautiful deity. They were fascinated by its magnificence and went inside the ashrama to repeat their entreaty to Rama.

Rama asked them wheather they wanted Him or the statue placed at the threshold. The rishis, enamoured by the deity’s beauty and still under its spell, told Him that they wanted the deity.

Rama, with a smile, agreed to their request and leaving the statue behind, left for Ayodhya. Later, the natives of Thirukannapuram brought the deity and established it in their village.

Time passed by and later they themselves, during a certain period, took the Ramar deity and the deities of Seetha, Lakshmana, Bharatha and Hanuman themselves and made it to Thalai Gnayiru, a village near Thiruthuraipoondi and buried them under a tree.

Years rolled by and it was the time when Sarabhoji Mannan ruled Thanjavur. One day, Lord Rama appeared in the king’s dream and told him to unearth the deities from Thalai Gnayiru. He asked the king to establish and worship the deities.

The king awoke and proceeded immendiately, with his entourage, to Thalai Gnayiru and unearthed the deities. When the king and his entourage were preparing to leave, the natives of the place prevented the king from taking the deities. The king managed to convince them and as compensation left the deities of Bharatha and Lakshmana behind with them. He took possession of Rama, Seetha and Hanuman statues and on his way rested at Vaduvur.

img_0166The people of the village (known for their unity) came to know about the idols and pleaded with the king to establish the deities in their Rukmani-Sathyabhama samedha Gopalan temple. Initially, the king refused but when the villagers threatened to jump from the tower of the temple and commit suicide, he relented. He allowed them to establish the idols and since then Rama has been the main deity in the Gopalan temple.

Later, the deity of Lakshmana was also sculpted by the people of Vaduvur. It appeared like a woman and so the villagers established it as Sundari Amman and built a separate temple for Her. They sculpted another deity of Lakshmana and today Rama with Seetha and Lakshmana stand majestically to bless the devotees at this temple.

It is said Kanva Maharishi worshipped in this temple and was blessed with the darshan of Sri Kodandaramar. Likewise, Kulasekara Perumal also was blessed with the Lord’s darshan. Of the two Vaishnava holy religious scriptures, Pancharathram and Vaikanasam, the former is followed in this temple…

SRI RAMA DARSHAN - PUNNAINALLUR

The Only Ramar temple in India with all the moolavar deities made of the sacred ‘Saligramam’ Stone.  1400 year old Utsavar idols of Raama, Sita and Lakshmana.

‘Saligarama Kothandaramar’ Koil is located in Punnai Nallur, about 7kms East of Thanjai Maa Mani Divya Desam, on the Thanjavur-Nagapattinam Highway and about ½km North of the Thanjavur Mariamman koil. This temple is said to be the Abhimaana Sthalam of Neelamegha Perumal of Thanjai Maa Mani koil.

Saligrama Moolavar

This is possibly the only (Raamar) temple in India where the moolavar deities of Raama, Sita, Lakshmana and Sugreeva have been made of the sacred ‘Saligramam’ stone. One normally finds the black Saligramam (stone) in the shape of a small stone. Here at the Kothandaramar temple, each of the big sized moolavar idol (all of them are in Standing Posture) is from the Saligramam stone. It is believed that a Nepal king (who was the son in law of Thanjavur) presented the sacred ‘Saligramam’ stones to the Thanjavur king.

Historical Utsavar Idols

The utsavar idols of Raama, Sita and Lakshmana that one sees today are said to be 1400 years old. These were found buried at Puvanur village near Needamangalam about 25kms from here.

Special Status for Vaanara King Sugreeva

Another feature at this temple is the special status assigned to the monkey king Sugreeva. It is believed that Raama, in recognition of Sugreeva’s help in finding Sita, wanted the Vaanara King by his side.

Construction of the temple

The temple was built by the Maratha king Pratap Singh, who lived in the 18th century and who contributed in no small way to a number of Vishnu temples in and around Thanjavur. There are references to the fact that the Maratha queen Emunaambal Bai set aside a lot of fertile land for the Kothandaramar temple. She also contributed in various other ways to the progress of the temple. Maratha King Shivaji and Kaamatchiamba Bai also contributed in a big way to this temple.

Sun Signs - Another speciality

Lord Hanuman is seen in a separate sannidhi in a standing posture facing South with a lifted right hand and with a lotus in his left hand.

On the upper wall of the Hanuman sannidhi, one finds stone carvings of the 12 sun signs. The belief is that devotees who stand under their respective sun sign and offer sincere prayers to the Lord will be relieved from all the difficulties relating to their sun sign.

HayaGriva Sannidhi

It is also believed that Lord Hayagriva will assist in the education and intellectual learning for those who invoke his blessings here at the Kothandaramar temple on the Thiruvonam day every month.

Management of the temple

The Kothandaramar temple is under the management of Shri. Babaji Rajah Bhonsle, the current prince of the Thanjavur Palace.

He requested Sri Ramar to give Dharsan without his Sangu and Chakaram. So Sri Ramar gave these things to Garudan and showed himself as "Kola Vallvill Raman" at this place.

And Garudan has Sangu and Chakkaram in his hands here. This incident shows that a true artist is beyond love and affection towards his family (ie) he is more concentrated in his work only. So, Lord Bhrama too came here to have Dharsan.

Many Sages and Saints have performed the "Vyasa Pooja" here.

This temple is maintained under the "Vygnasa Agamam" which means:

Viganasa Maharishi was born from the soul of Sriman Narayanan. The format of Slokams which he assorted is known as "Vyganasa Aagamam", the Four Lakh Granda's (letter format) which was formed by his four students Maharishi, Athiri, Bhrigu and Kashiyapar is also known as Vyganasam.

Bodily matters were put into the Gruhyam sect while details regarding the implantation of idols of deities, prayers, rules for repenting his sins (Prayachitham) are put under the Deivegam section.

As all the wordly bliss are found here, mother earth (ie) Bhoomi Piratti came here to get the Dharsan of the Lord here.

Like how Plaintain tree bores sapplings before it dies, the humanity should also cherish forever and to explian this, the sthala virutcham (ie) tree of the temple is Plaintain tree here.

Putkalavartham is the name of the cloud which bores all blissful things to humanity. As the lord of this place bless us heartly, the Pushkalavartha cloud become his Vimaanam here.

1. Since Lord Shukra, Lord Indra, Lord Brahma, Markandeya Maharishi, Parasara Maharishi, Mayan were all blessed by Lord Kola Valvilliraman specially here, if visited this sthalam gives all the Puniyam (Value of good deed's) gained by having Dharsan at all the 108 divyadesams. only.

2. Garudan in this Sthalam has Sangu and Chakkaram in his hands, which will be generally found on the hands of the Perumal.

SRI RAMA DARSHAN - THIRUPPULLAMBOOTHANGUDI

Sri Ramapiran, who is opularly called as “Chakaravarthy Thirumagan”, is doing all the final funeral for “Jadaayu”, which the Eagle bird. After finishing his activity, he is taking rest due to the work done for the final ceremony of Jadaayu. This is Kolam the God shows his thirukkolam to the world.

Valvil Raman, who is the Emperumaan of this sthalam, after Sitapirattiyar his wife is lost, he is holding only his Kothandam, the Bow. This is the only support he has inspite of loosing his wife. But, Bhoomi Pirattiyyar, who helped Rama in the final funeral in Thiruputtkuzhi is giving support here and is sitting along with Valvil Ramar. Since, the Lord does the final ceremony for Jadaayu, the Eagle belongs to the pull family (One king of bird family) and after finishing the ceremony, he takes rest. So this shetram is called as “Pullam Kudi”. Kudi means the place of staying in Tamil.

Kiruthrajan, when doing tapas keeping Emperumaan in his heart and mind, Valvil Raman arised in front of him in Bujangha Sayanam. Since, the Theertham which purified Kiruthrarajan, the theertham here is called “Kiruthra theertham”. Emperumaan Sriman Narayanan showed Prathyaksham for himself. Chakaravarthy Thirumagan, Sri Ramar born as and brought up as an ordinary human being, he met his moola avathaar (Previous avathaar) Parasuramar. He minimised or reduced the Headweight of Parasuramar and made war with him and finally got his friendship and his blessings.

The primary moral of this is if how big and powerful man you may be, we must give respect and should not be trapped inside Maya. To all of the human beings in the world, our parents are the prime most and the first person to be worshipped. Because of this reason only, Lord ParasuRama, as ordered by his father asked what he wants as “Varam” for killing his mother, he asked for her mother to regain her life. This shows how dedicated to his father and mother. And in next avathaar, he took his avathaar as Sri Ramar and he respect his father and mother as that of the previous avathaar.

Since, he was held in the forest, when King Dasaratha was dead, he could not do the final funeral to his father. But, keeping Jadaayu in his father’s place, he did the final funeral to him as what he could have done to his father, King Dasaratha. When Parasu Raman was against Rama, he showed his actual image (or) face as Parasu Ramar and Sri Ramar are not two different people but they are a single person, the final destiny Sriman Narayanan. Likewise, after finishing all the final funeral for Jadaayu, when Rama was taking rest, Kiruthra Rajan made Tavam against sriman Narayanan, when Sri Rama along with Sangu and Chakkaram and Bhoomi Pirattiyaar prathyaksham for the king and explained him that he is Sriman Narayanan. Likewise, he gave prathyaksham for Sri Ramar along with Sangu, Chakkaram and Bhoomi pirattiyaar with 4 (Chathur) bhujam (hand).

The final funeral of Jadaayu was done under Punnai tree, when the paramathma gave his dharshan to Rama and Emperumaan gave his dharshan to Thirumangai Mannan. This is one of the said story of this shetram. The main point to be noticed in this shetram, is only here, Sri Ramar gives his seva as Chakaravarthi (along with Sangu and Chakram).

After 1 1/2 Km. from here, is a small village, Mandanggudi which is the birth place of Thondar Adi Podi Alwar. One of the five sacred things, Earth, Bhomi Pirattiyar give seva along with Sri Rama as Narayanan in Nindra Thirukkolam. Because of this reason this shetram is called “Pullam Bootha Kudi”.

SRI RAMA DARSHAN - THIRUKKUDANTHAI

The temple town of Kumbakkonam is the abode of several deities each unique and distinct. The temple of Lord Rama situated in the centre of the town is a connoisseurs' delight. The temple is replete with Purana.

King Raghunayak ruled Tanjore from 1614-1640. He was an ardent devotee of Rama . His lieutenant Govinda Dikshitar called Govinda Ayyan was also devout and looked after the temple works.

King Raghunayak dug a holy tank in Darasuram near Kumbakkonam  while the work was in progress they found icons of Rama and Sita in the tank. The King's joy knew no bounds. Thus he built a temple for Rama and called it Ramaswamy temple.
This temple is unique as Rama and Sita are in a Pattabishekam posture-Coronation scene Rama and Sita are surrounded by lakshmana, shatrugna, Bharatha and the ever obedient Hanuman with Veena in one hand and the holy book of Ramayana in the other hand in a sitting posture. This coronation scene attracts people from far off places who are awe struck at the divine sight of the celestial confluence.

The Ramaswamy Temple which depicts the paintings of Ramayanam is another important Vaishanavite temple in Kumbakonam. The greatness of Ramasamy Temple is said to be the only temple where Rama, Sita are in the same platform and also that Hanumar instead of reading the Ramayana is playing the Veena. The entire deity is said to be made from Saligrama Monolith which is truly astounding. Morever the Temple is filled with such intricate carvings in all its pillars that even great Bharatanatyam dancers come here to see the Mudras.

A separate sanctum sanctorum is dedicated to Srinivasa with Sreedevi and Bhoodevi There are separate shrines for Azhwars and acharyas. The temple looks majestic with a mammoth Gopuram which seem to beckon the devotees to propitiate the lord inside. There is a sprawling Mantapam which is a treasure trove of sculptures. The temple has well preserved paintings of Ramayanam.

In the Mahamandapa there are several pillars on which are sculptures depicting the "Ramayana". The carvings are sharp, and at the same time, they exude devotion. On the walls around the Prakara the "Ramayana" is again told, this time in murals. These have been often restored and renovated.
